Dutch MPs are the best-paid lawmakers in Europe, according to PoliticalSalaries.com research comparing the pay packets of politicians across the continent.

Netherlands’ House of Representatives (Tweede Kamer) members receive an annual base salary of €141,429, including 8% holiday pay and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus.

That is around €7000 more than German MPs – the second best-paid politicians in Europe – who earn €134,726 as members of the Bundestag.

Icelandic MPs are in third place with an annual base salary of €125,800 (18.3 million Icelandic króna).

Italian MPs are in fourth place with a base salary of €125,220.

Italian MPs were previously the highest-paid in Europe but have dropped down the political pay charts after a series of salary cuts and freezes in recent years.

The list of Europe’s top 10 best-paid politicians is completed by legislators from Austria (€124,217), Denmark (estimated €110,800), Ireland (€113,679), the United Kingdom (estimated €109,900), Belgium (€105,773) and Norway (estimated €101,400).

The lowest-paid legislators in Europe are MPs in Ukraine and Serbia.

The listed figures refer only to base salaries. The figures do not include additional allowances that may be available for housing, travel, food or ministerial roles.
