What is Mark Carney’s salary?

Mark Carney will be paid C$406,200 as the prime minister of Canada if he retains power at the 2025 election – the equivalent of around US$282,000.

The Canadian PM’s salary is made up of two parts: a basic House of Commons salary of C$203,100 and an additional prime ministerial salary of the same amount.

Until election day on 28 April, Carney will only receive the prime ministerial portion of the salary because he does not yet have a seat in the House of Commons. If he wins a seat in the lower house at the election and retains his position as PM, he will get the whole lot.

The salary of Canada’s national legislators is normally increased each April, with the next pay raise already baked in for 1 April 2025.

Whichever party leader becomes PM on 28 April will be the 9th highest-paid world leader.

Ahead of the Canadian PM in the global pay charts are the leaders of Singapore, Germany, Switzerland, USA, Australia, Austria, Belgium and New Zealand.

From 1 April to 27 April, his annual salary will be C$203,100 because he does not yet have a seat in the House of Commons.
