Australian prime minister Anthony Albanese will receive a higher salary than the US president thanks to the latest pay rise for Canberra politicians.

It will be the first time in history an Australian prime minister earns more than their US counterpart.

All federal politicians in Australia will get a 3.5 per cent pay rise after a decision handed down by the country’s independent Remuneration Tribunal on 17 June 2024.

That means an uplift of A$20,570 a year for Mr Albanese, starting 1 July 2024.

Mr Albanese’s salary will rise to A$607,520, the equivalent of about US$403,000 at the time of writing.

The US president is paid US$400,000 per year, a figure that has remained unchanged since 2001 when George W Bush was in the White House.

The base salary for Australian MPs and senators will increase by about A$8000, bringing the minimum pay of a Canberra politician to A$233,660 per year.
