Mark Carney will be paid C$406,200 as the new prime minister of Canada, the equivalent of around US$282,000.
The Canadian PM’s salary is made up of two parts: a basic House of Commons salary of C$203,100 and an additional prime ministerial salary of the same amount.
In other words, the Canadian MP always earns twice that of a backbench House of Commons MP.
The salary of Canada’s national legislators is normally increased each April, with the next pay rise due on 1 April 2025.
At the time of writing (15 March 2025), Mark Carney is the 9th highest-paid world leader.
Ahead of him in the global pay charts are the leaders of Singapore, Germany, Switzerland, USA, Australia, Austria, Belgium and New Zealand.
